My dog ate chips and now has bloody diarrhea. Is it serious?

My dog weighs 20 lbs. He ate about 4 sour cream and onion chips. He now has diarrhea that looks kind of bloody, but no other symptoms. What is wrong? What do I do?

Poor Toby! It could be the chips have upset his stomach leading to the diarrhea that looks bloody. He hasn't eaten a large amount, so he likely should be fine. It's important to consider that this potentially bloody diarrhea could be due to another cause besides the chips, such as a GI illness or hemorrhagic gastroenteritis. I can give you a home remedy to try to see if that helps. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, he starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away. Cooked bones can cause a problem for dogs in a number of ways. If Chip broke the bone while eating it, it could splinter and cause problems in the GI tract. Bones can also get stuck in the GI tract. The fat can also cause vomiting and diarrhea. Diarrhea that continues for more than a few days, or is associated with blood in the stool, vomiting, lethargy or a poor appetite is a reason for a visit to your veterinarian. Since Chip has blood throughout his stool, I would recommend a visit to the vet. In the meantime, if he is eating and drinking normally, we will often recommend a bland easily digested diet consisting of ½ cooked white rice and ½ cooked white meat chicken (boiled without any skin or bones). If he does well with a bland diet and his diarrhea resolves, then you can slowly transition back to his normal diet over a few days. My dog ate a bully bone yesterday and seemed fine. Took him out today and he had diarrhea and it looked like blood mixed. Kinda dark but also red. He has eaten and he was just playing ball. Not acting out of the ordinary.
It could be that the bully bone upset Tornado’s stomach leading to the diarrhea with blood in it. Given he’s otherwise acting normal, I can give you a home remedy for him. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts a couple of times a day for several days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet diet. If the diarrhea continues in the absence of food, he has diarrhea on the bland diet, there is still blood in his feces, he stops eating, starts vomiting, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, and/or becomes very lethargic, take him into a vet immediately. my 8 yr old papillion male has bloody discharge diarriha that started yesterday. No vomiting and is in good health otherwise except not eating food but will eat treats. What should I do
If he is acting normal then you can withhold food for 12 hours and then offer him a small amount of a bland diet, like boiled chicken and white rice, and see how he does with that. You could also add a probiotic to his food. If the diarrhea continues, he starts vomiting, and/or becomes lethargic then he needs to be examined by a vet for treatment. He could have an infection, parasite, colitis, HGE, etc. and your vet can run lab-work to help diagnose and treat. Hope he feels better soon!

my dog just started pooping blood and having bad diarrhea and it's leaking now and she poops like every few minutes i don't think she ate anything abnormal we do give her random food but nothing big or bad for her i don't know what's wrong
Even random food can cause GI upset. The only food Kira needs is her dog food. I'm concerned that she is pooping blood, keep a close eye on that. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, she starts vomiting food, she continues to have blood in her poop, she stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away.

The diarrhea could be irritating Odin's GI tract, leading to the bleeding. The bland diet of chicken and rice is a good idea. Feed it in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, there is still blood in his feces on the bland diet, he starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away. Poor pup! The vomiting and diarrhea could be due to eating the human food but other things like bacterial over growth, parasites (worms and giardia) or even something more severe like an intestinal blockage could be to blame. The blood indicates that his intestines are severely inflamed. I recommend to have your pup examined by the veterinarian today if at all possible. He can receive medications that can make him feel better and resolve the inflammation much faster (and hopefully stop any progression of the condition). Sometimes times a bland diet can help and then a slow, gradual introduction to the normal food can be done. A bland diet can consist of 25% boiled white meat chicken and 75% boiled white rice. This should all be plain. Make sure your pup is drinking water. Break up the meals into smaller amounts than normal and fed more frequently. I hope your pup starts feeling better quickly! Poor guy. It sounds like Riley is having classic signs of hemorrhagic gastroenteritis, which is likely caused by the bones or something else he ingested. It is best to get him to your vet as soon as you can. However, if there is no one available today and he otherwise seems to be pretty energetic and isn't continuing to vomit, then you can do some things for now to help calm his stomach down. 1) Bland diet- boiled plain chicken or lean ground turkey and white rice 2) Fiber- 1-2 tsp of canned pumpkin (not the pie filling) added to his food daily to help firm things up 3) Probiotic- over the counter Culturelle or Fortiflora (available online) added to his food daily to help resotre his normal GI flora. When pets have blood in the stool this indicates their intestines are inflammed and the GI flora is imbalanced. If Riley seems to ill however, taking him to an ER vet today is highly recommended. It sounds like Diesel has diarrhea, and the spotting of blood could be due to irritation of the GI tract. I can give you a home remedy to see if that helps. Poor Buddy! Diarrhea can be caused by a variety of conditions, including parasites, viruses, "garbage gut" from eating different foods or treats, among many others. Buddy may be having a bit of blood in his stool from irritation to the colon or parasites. Since you can't take him to the vet today and he is otherwise eating and drinking normally, try withholding food for the next 12-24 hours. After that time, offer boiled white meat chicken and white rice (1 cup of the 50:50 mixture for every 10 pounds of body weight, divided into 2-4 smaller meals) for the next few days. After several days on this bland diet, gradually mix in his normal dog food over another 5-7 days. However, if his diarrhea continues or worsens, if he becomes lethargic, stops eating and drinking, or has more blood in his stool, Buddy will need to go to his vet for further evaluation.
