My dog ate chips and now has bloody diarrhea. Is it serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My dog weighs 20 lbs. He ate about 4 sour cream and onion chips. He now has diarrhea that looks kind of bloody, but no other symptoms. What is wrong? What do I do?

Poor Toby! It could be the chips have upset his stomach leading to the diarrhea that looks bloody. He hasn't eaten a large amount, so he likely should be fine. It's important to consider that this potentially bloody diarrhea could be due to another cause besides the chips, such as a GI illness or hemorrhagic gastroenteritis. I can give you a home remedy to try to see if that helps. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, he starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away. Best of luck, I hope this helps!
