Why is my newly adopted dog sleeping so much? Is this normal behavior?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 50 lbs

I adopted a pound dog that would not sleep while at the pound, now today when we brought him home he walked around for awhile and then he crashed. He is sleeping so soundly he won’t wake up. He stretched and his eyes half opened but he sighed and stayed asleep. Is this ok because he didn’t sleep for a week ? Overall he is a healthy dog and had all tests ran etc and nothing abnormal. Thank you.

Congrats on your new dog! How lovely of you to adopt a dog from the pound, you likely saved Jay's life. Given that he would not sleep at the pound, he is probably very exhausted and needs a good sleep. Because he's had tests run and they have all come back normal, I wouldn't be too worried about this behavior. Let him sleep, and I bet he will wake up when he's hungry. Enjoy your new dog, and I hope this helps!
