My dog yelps and scratches after topical flea treatment. Why?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 40 lbs

Three days ago I gave my dog (corgi/australian cattle dog mix, 5 yrs 40 lbs) the Sentry Pro flea treatment for his proper weight category. The next day he was still scratching pretty bad. I went to inspect the area on his neck/back that the treatment was put on and he yelped and ran away from me. The scratching started to let up today but ever since I put the topical treatment on, he yelps whenever I try to look at the spot on his back or touch it. What might be causing this?

Max could have some skin irritation from where you put the flea treatment. This can be a side effect of using topical treatments. I wouldn't try to touch the spot since it seems to bother him, hopefully this irritation will go away in a couple of days. If it doesn't or you notice a sore developing where you put the treatment, then I would have him seen by a vet. Best of luck, I hope this helps!

I gave my mixed Pit Chihuahua 21 lb of flea treatment between the shoulder blades and tail and since then he keeps biting at his tail I believe he's irritated from the flea treatment and I don't know what to do
There is a possibility that he is irritated from flea bites at his tail and/or from the spot on. It is a well-known side effect that spot-ons can cause an itch, hair loss, irritation, but usually that irritation is gone within a few hours. Do not let him bite or lick or scratch the application location. You can put a loose t-shirt on him covering up the location or put on an e-collar. If the irritation has not subsided by tomorrow, or if Boy boy develops a wound , he will need to be seen by a veterinarian for an exam. In the meantime do not put cream or ointment onto the location where you applied the flea treatment.

our dog has recently started twitching constantly and wants constant attention . Had a new haircut and nails cut about 4 days ago and has received his flea/ tick prevention 3 days ago .
Poor guy. It sounds like he may be having muscle spasms from the flea prevention, since this is a common side effect seen. I would recommend washing him again to remove the product and then visiting your vet to have him treated for his muscle spasms. A muscle relaxer likely will be recommended as well as any other supportive care meds he needs. I would also make a note to avoid using the flea preventative in the future if this is deemed to be the cause. I hope that your pet Max feels better soon! Best wishes and take care.

I've been using advantage flea&tick spray for my dogs, whenever I spray my dogs they get hyper and start scratching and bitting themself. They run around like crazy. I spray them from a distance and I don't use alot. Is that normal? Should I continue
Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! I think the topicals sometimes cause tingling or burning. My dog didn’t like the advantix spot on. I really like the new oral flea/tick medications, monthly nexgard or simparica or every 3 month Bravecto. I hope this helps!

Max does not have any fleas or ticks or any bug but he is constantly scratching his shoulder blades/back of neck...if it's dry skin what do I do? Or is there something else it could be?
Scratching can be caused by various reasons such as fleas, mites ,fungal infection, bacterial infection and allergies. the first 4 needs to be ruled out before we start treating for allergies. in order to do that first de-flea Max with a high quality flea treatment such as advantage spot on, if it doesn't help - take him to the vet in order to check for/treat the other possibilities. If everything is ruled out, then an allergy treatment can be started. Usually an hypoallergenic food is a good way to start together with anti histamines. if it doesn't help - the best solution is a medication called Apoquel which treats allergies with great success and without side effects.

I recently bought flea medicine because I had found a flea. My dog keeps scratching himself, I even gave him a shower. Why is he still itching himself?
There could be several reasons that Ramsey is still scratching himself. One important thing to remember is that not all flea prevention are created equal. The best products for fleas on the market are oral products such as Simparica. Oral products kill fleas within 4 hours. Topical products are generally 12 to 24 hours. When fleas die faster, pets are not bitten as often and usually it’s less. I recommend to discuss starting an oral product with your veterinarian. Another potential cause would be allergies or dry skin and not actually related to the flea you found. I do recommend to treat what you see so treat for fleas. Your veterinarian will also have medication to help stop the itching so that Ramsey is more comfortable quickly. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

My dog keeps scratching and biting, I have treated her for fleas but continues to scratch n bite. 1st pic is her belly n by her back legs, 2nd pic is her tail, 3rd pic are what both her sides are starting to look like from scraching so hard
Looks like your little lady is giving herself some hot spots there. If there is a hot spot forming under the hair then the best thing to do is to remove the hair and cleanse the area with an antibacterial solution. Some dogs require topical and/or oral antibiotics and other dogs benefit from some steroids to stop the itch. Most hot spots are secondary to underlying allergies (inhaled/environmental, food, or flea). If seasonal environmental is most likely. The best way to help her would be to see your family vet to have the areas addressed topically and so that medications can be prescribed to treat any infection and stop the itch. what is the best way to treat fleas. my 2 year old chipoo and I have been battling them and hes starting to loose hair on his back end from scratching. we are picking up capstar but any other advice would be great. hes miserable and so am I.
Capstar is effective for killing adult fleas that are on Max. You will need a topical or oral treatment to continue killing adults and eggs both on and off him. Frontline, K9 Advantix and Vectra are just a few topical preventatives. NexGard and Bravecto are newer oral medications. Your veterinarian should examine Max to rule out other causes for the hair loss and to dispense antibiotics or antihistamines if indicated. Topicals are very effective when used properly. Use the appropriate dose based on Max's weight. Do not split doses between pets. It must be applied at least 3 days before or after a bath or grooming. It must be applied directly to the skin. This is accomplished by parting the fur with the applicator tip down to the skin. Treat ALL pets in the house for at least 3 consecutive months, preferably year round. Vacuum all areas and dispose of the bag outdoors. Wash all fabrics and beddings that have had contact with any pet in the hottest water temp allowable. The environmen

I gave my dog fle & tick Nexgard about 5 hrs ago for the 1st time and ever since shes been scratching and biting herself non stop. Shes miserable. Is this a side effect? What can i do to help
It has been known to cause local skin irritation, but the itching could mean that it is working if she had fleas on her. I would see if there is a number on the package to call for advice. If the itching continues into tomorrow or if she's actually injuring herself with the scratching or starts having other symptoms such as lethargy, loss of appetite, vomiting, etc., get her seen by your vet as soon as possible.

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! This is possibly due to allergies. It could actually still be flea allergy dermatitis if the fleas are still not under control. It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). My rescuer keeps scratching and we bought flea and tick medication you put down the middle of her back. But it seems like it's getting worse. She's also timid and hard to walk , any suggestions
This is probably due to an allergy, although it could also be infection or mites. First of all, in order to rule out skin parasites, you will need to treat with a high quality flea treatment, then ask the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try to discover the cause of the allergy. Three main type of allergies are usually affecting pets: food allergies, flea and parasite related ones and environmental type (allergens coming from trees, pollens, dust etc etc). Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair any possible skin lesions (like steroids and antibiotics).
