My dog is bleeding after spay surgery and diarrhea. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 4 months old | 60 lbs

Lucy was fixed today. She started having diarrhea right after she woke up from surgery. The vet gave me meds to help stop the diarrhea. Now she is passing pretty much straight blood. Is this normal and what do I do for her?

I recommend taking Lucy Lu to a vet asap if she is just bleeding. This could be hemorrhagic gastroenteritis and she can become dehydrated very quickly. I would look up 24 hour emergency hospital in your area. You can try calling your regular vet and sometimes they will have a recording on where to go if there is an emergency on their phone. If she isn't bleeding anymore and she is acting fine then it is ok to wait until the morning but if she is bleeding and/or lethargic she needs to see a vet asap. I hope she feels better soon and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
