Why is my old hamster unresponsive, stiff, but still breathing?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Unknown - Small Animal | Male | unneutered | 2 years and 5 months old

We have a 2 and half year old hamster who has become more and more feeble. Today after returning from work I found him unresponsive. He is still breathing and his arms are quivering slighlty but the rest of his body is stiff. Is he in a coma like state or perhaps a stroke?

Hamsters do hibernate, but typically it occurs when the temperature drops below 65F. Hamsters live in average 18 months to 2.5 years, so unfortunately it could be that Viker is getting old and reaching the end of his life. I'd recommend a visit with the vet as soon as possible for him. Best of luck.
