My dog is bloated from Prednisone. How long until he's back to normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 6 years and 7 months old | 80 lbs

My dog has been taking Prednisone for about a week now. He has two more doses, and then will be finished with it. He seems to be bloated. How long after his last dose, will it take for him to become his normal goofy self?! It breaks my heart to see him like this. He had to take the medicine (also an antibiotic) for an infection in his paw.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I'm sorry to hear Rusty had an infection in his paw, those can be ouchy! Prednisone has a lot of medical indications, but the side effects do include an increase in appetite, drinking/urinating more, and a possible "bloated" abdominal appearance. These symptoms typically resolve within 48-72 hours after completing the course of the medication. If they are persistent or you are concerned, I would recommend reaching out to your regular veterinarian to see if Rusty needs to be re-checked or if anything else may be going on. Good luck!
