My Shih Tzu has runny diarrhea but seems fine. Should I worry?

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Female | spayed | 9 years and 8 months old | 14 lbs

Hello! I have a question about my 9 year old shitzu, Lily. Today we woke up and she had very runny diarrhea. She did not eat any breakfast at 1st, but about an hour later she ate a little bit and fortunately kept it down. She has not thrown up at all and is drinking water. She is otherwise acting normal and actually had a little snack about an hour ago. However, she is still producing runny stool quite a bit. But whatever she does eat she is keeping down, which is great. Should I be concerned?

Hello! I wouldn’t be too worried about lily at this point. if she is otherwise feeling good, I might try her on a very bland diet for a few days. An example of a bland diet would be boiled skinless chicken breast and steamed white rice (1 part chicken to 2-3 parts rice). If the diarrhea is persisting or if her appetite decreases or if she begins vomiting then I would have her veterinarian evaluate her. It would be a good idea to bring a sample of her stool in if the diarrhea continues so her vet can screen for intestinal parasites. I hope lily is back to herself very soon!
