Why is my cat's eye closed with discharge after a cat fight?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 1 year and 1 month old | 13 lbs

Black cat not wanting to open eye all the way, has sleep like discharge around it, new cat in house that she chases. What would be the symptoms of eye laceration or infection if new cat slapped her in face? I'm not sure if she did get slapped or got something in it or something else

The symptoms of a corneal ulcer or scratch to the eye are squinting or holding that eye closed, discharge (clear to yellow/green), and redness of the conjunctiva and sclera (the tissues around the eye). Upper respiratory viruses can also cause some squinting and discharge. If onyx continues showing symptoms I would have a veterinarian examine his eyes. It may be important to get him started on a topical antibiotic medication. I hope onynx heals quickly. Great name!!
