My cat has ringworm. Is it as dangerous for humans as I read?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Turkish Angora | Male | unneutered | 3 months and 7 days old

I’ve noticed that my cat is having some bald spots on his fur, I took him for examination and the vet told me that he has ringworm fungus on different areas of his body and prescribed him a shampoo and pills. I started searching ringworms and I found out that they could be extremely dangerous for humans and could cause serious damage, to nails, permanent hair loss and I saw horrific pictures. And I’m getting so anxious about it. Should I be that worried or was what I read a bit exaggerated?

While ringworm is potentially contagious to people, the reality is that by the time your cat is diagnosed with ringworm, you have already been exposed to it for a long period of time and have not had any problems with it. Most people do not contact ringworm from cats (or other animals), but from other people. I am attaching a handout with more information about ringworm in cats below. https://veterinarypartner.vin.com/default.aspx?pid=19239&id=4951439 If you develop any abnormal skin lesions, I would certainly recommend having your doctor evaluate them, but I do think what you read was certainly exaggerated. Good luck! I hope that was helpful and answered your question. Thanks for using PetCoach.
