Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Female | spayed | 14 years and 5 months old | 20 lbs

My dog has pancreatitis, vet wants to put her on IV as part of her treatment but she has a heart murmur. How dangerous is IV fluids used in this treatment to a pet with heart issues? I've been told that they may not be able to tolerate it.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This depends on many factors such as how severe the heart disease is and what the fluid type and rate is. However, if done cautiously, in almost all circumstances it is safe. Unfortunately, with pancreatitis, IV fluids are usually essential so you have to cautiously administer them. If you notice her having any coughing or difficulty breathing, contact your veterinarian right away. Good luck and have a great day!
