My dog's ear is irritated again. What causes it & should I see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Staffordshire Bull Terrier | Male | neutered | 10 years old

My dog has an irrataed ear he constanrly scratches it and shakes his head. Hes been to the vets and was given some ear drops they seem to have helped but now its back. Ive been using some ear drops that i bought at a pet store to try help but nothing has changed. Is there anything we can use at home or do we need to take him to the vets again. Also wondering if you have any idea what could be causing it.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to Diesel's problem has recurred. Given his age the two most like underlying issues are allergies leading to uncontrolled inflammation or a polyp or other blockage of the ear canal. Either can lead to an infection of bacteria, yeast, or acombination of the two which will make the inflammation worse. As the inflammation worsens the infection will worsen, so it becomes a self-perpetuating cycle. Ears and skin can be very frustrating, so frequent rechecks and repeated testing via cytology (microscopic look from a swab from the ears) are needed to maximize treatment benefits. Hope this helps!
