Is it safe for my dog to chew real beef or pork bones from a butcher?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Boston Terrier | Male | neutered | 2 months and 24 days old | 22 lbs

Can I give Charlie a real bone to chew? A friend of mine is a butcher and he offered to give me any bone I wanted. If possible, what would be best? Beef or pork bones?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Charlie. I do not recommend giving him a real bone from a butcher nor a pet supply store. The main concern I have is the dog can break off a piece of bone and swallow it. I have had to perform surgery more than once to remove such pieces out of a dog's intestines. I hope this information helps!
