Why is my puppy crying with a fractured leg in a splint? Is it pain?

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Male | neutered | 4 months and 14 days old | 29 lbs

My puppy whimpers or screams at random times. He is currently in a splint for a fractured right hind leg. He is on Hanapentin and Vetprofen. I’m not sure what could be causing his wimpedinh/screaming? We went to the emergency vet twice when the break happened, once to get examined and then to have the splint put on. We also went to the vet yesterday to check the fitting of the splint. I posed this question to the vet and was told it could need more padding. He whimpered later that night.

I would suspect that Bambino's whimpering and crying is due to pain. A fractured leg would be very painful, and he is on pain medication to help with that pain. Be sure to give it as directed, and if you feel that maybe it's not helping, discuss with his vet possibly using another pain medication for him. Best of luck, I hope this helps.

Poor Filamena! I am sure this is a stressful experience for you and her. I am glad she has good pain medication support. Tramadol has a wide dose range and dosing frequency range so if you feel like her current level of pain is not well-managed on the current dose or dosing interval this may be able to be adjusted with a call to her doctor. Also if you feel like she is still painful with these medications your veterinarian could recommend adding on something else in the short-term. Additionally Huskies are a very sensitive breed so she may be feeling a little bit anxious as well so you may be able to discuss a mild sedative with your veterinarian to see if this helps her rest and remain relaxed in this short-term period. It's also possible if this just happened today that she may be having some side effects from any pain medications given at the clinic which should be better over the next 24 hours. This is a medical emergency, and this puppy needs to see a vet now. This will be extremely painful for him, and he needs pain medications right away. Do not give him any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. He also needs x-rays to determine how bad the fracture is, and if surgery is an option to repair it. If the fracture is really bad, amputation may be needed, but only a vet can decide that. Please take him into a vet immediately.

Did the veterinarian give you any medication to help with pain? If not I would highly encourage you to call tomorrow and request something for pain management. Also, is he limping or holding that leg up? If not then I would be suspicious that something else may be bothering him. Often I find neck or back pain present on dogs who “cry out” for no known reason. Of course many other possibilities exist as well. An x-ray and / or blood work may be helpful in narrowing down the diagnosis. Best of luck and I hope he improves soon! Thank you for using Pet Coach.

Poor Lily. When a pet isn't showing a pain response but limping on their back leg, it could indicate that they have either torn a ligament in the joint or have a severe muscle sprain. Also if you don't notice any obvious swelling, then a fracture is likely not the cause. Rest her, no running, jumping playing and leash walk only for the next couple of weeks. You can also do cold compresses on the limb 1-2 times a day. if there is no improvement within 3-4 days, then it's best to get her seen by your veterinarian for a full exam and pet friendly pain medication. She may also need x-rays of the leg to determine the underlying injury (cause). Do not give her people pain meds however because these can be quite toxic to pets and cause major liver and/or kidney damage. It's better to get all pain and anti-inflammatory meds from your vet. Even though she isn't crying out, there is presumed inflammation at the very least, so she can benefit from medication at any time. I hope your puppy gets

My pup got hurt on her rear leg. She’s limping and is in pain when I touch her leg. I can’t tell whether she has a broken bone.
Poor Nymeria! She is adorable! Limping and crying when touched can definitely be an indication of a fracture (broken bone). I recommend having Nymeria seen by a vet right away, as this can be extremely painful. They can localize the trauma with an x-ray and stabilize the leg with a bandage, cast, or surgery if necessary. There are 24 hour emergency clinics in most towns/cities. I hope all is well!

How do you know if you pet has a broken leg. The reason I asked that is that my 3 month old pup, when she walk on her left paw she always making noises and I don’t know what to do.
It's not likely to be broken if she is using that leg but if she seems to be in pain when using the leg you should take her to the vet in order to get it checked, the vet will do a physical exam and will usually be able to tell you right away if he suspects a fracture or not.

Poor Peanut! Pain like this can be caused by a fracture, bone or joint infection, or nerve damage. I recommend having Peanut seen by a vet as soon as possible - they may recommend x-rays to determine the cause of the pain. In the meantime, you should keep Peanut as calm as possible to prevent further trauma. I hope all is well with Peanut!
