My pet licked topical spray. Is it harmful? How to stop licking?

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 5 lbs

Vet has ordered Hexachlor-K conditioner 1 spray every 12 hrs for 14 days, was told to spray it in her coat and leave it in. What happens if she gives herself a bath or licks where we sprayed? Is it harmful? If so how do we put it on her and prevent her from licking it?

I don't see any warnings on the product about it being a problem if the animal ingests it when licking it, but to keep her from licking it off, I would keep an Ecollar on Missy while you are using this spray. If ingesting enough of it, it can. The best thing to do is place a small amount on the affected area and play with the kitten to distract him or feed him so he eats while it dries some. If it is a persist problem then you may need an e collar to place on his neck so he can't reach it or talk to your vet about a different treatment

Hello. I very recently applied flea treatment to my dogs. I applied it like it said on the pack, but it ran down their coat and I think they licked some off. Should I be worried?
No. Unfortunately the topical product will get on their hair. It’s almost impossible to prevent this. It is best to prevent them from licking it but it shouldn’t hurt them. I would just watch them for any abnormal behaviors. If that product doesn’t seem to be helping much I would consider an oral flea preventative next time. These sometimes work better due to a faster kill time. I hope this helps!

Hello, thank you for your question. I believe that keeping a close eye on your cat and trying to prevent her from licking the product is a good option. Most of these products cause mild GI upset or excessive salivation when they are ingested, but rarely life threatening signs. If your cat develops any vomiting, diarrhea, or inappetance I would recommend having her seen by a veterinarian. Hope this helps, good luck!

You have discovered the biggest problem with using topical treatments in pets! While a small amount of ingested iodine is likely safe (although may cause irritation to the mouth or hypersalivation), you won't be doing any good putting the iodine on the wound since Khora will just lick it right off. If you want to continue putting topical treatments on the wound, then you will need to cover them with a bandage (that is changed frequently to stay clean) or have Khora wear an e-collar to prevent her from licking the ointments.

The amount of steroid shouldn't be harmful to Sky. Use caution with the chloramphenicol though. It can cause bone marrow suppression in some dogs and aplastic anemia in some people. A safer option would be to use a shirt or recovery wear for pets. A bitter agent, such as Bitter Apple Spray or Fooey!, can be used around the site to deter licking.

It is not toxic but not beneficial to the wounds if she licks it right off. It sounds like you need a large e collar since she can still reach all these places. Try to apply the medicine right before you feed her, as this may distract her some. Go to your vet tomorrow or the pet store and get a large e collar so she cannot reach the areas.

Hi Jewel, Yes it could be harmful if she ingests it. I really don't recommend using Hartz products - they are not very safe. If you need a flea prevention please use one of the name brands like Advantage II or Frontline. Always put the product high up on the neck so the cat can't reach around and lick it.

Hi, no she shouldn't be licking the wound nor the powder. The wound's healing can be delayed if she is licking it and it could get infected as well. The powder contains Zinc that can be toxic if ingested repeatedly. Are you able to put a buster collar or elizabethan collar on her at all ?

Place an e-collar (cone) on her to prevent licking. Some of these products can cause GI upset, excess drooling or irritation around the mounting if licked or ingested. These products typically dry in several hours. Apply it before bedtime, place the e-collar and by morning, she should be fine. As an alternative, there are oral flea and tick preventatives that can be used instead of topicals. Discuss options with your veterinarian.
