My dog got loose without his collar. What should I do if he's okay?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | neutered | 1 year and 1 month old | 90 lbs

This afternoon, I discovered that Finn had been on the loose without his collar on. When I let him out, he had his collar on and was properly chained. About half an hour after I let him out, I went outside to check on him and saw his collar lying on the porch with his chain still attached. Within 10 seconds, he came running to me, but I don't know where from. I don't know where he had been, but he didn't have any wounds and I don't think any skunks got him. Is there anything else I need to do?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! As long as he is otherwise doing fine with no wounds and no vomiting, diarrhea, inappetence or other signs, it would be fine to continue to monitor him as he is likely going to be ok. Good luck and have a great day!
