How to feed a puppy with beef sensitivity: dry food and homemade?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Border Collie | Female | spayed

Hi I have a puppy who my vet wants me to take off of beef to see if this is the case. My 2 German Shepards get raw meat which most the puppy will no longer be allowed but she loves it! I've got beef free and grain free dry food for her but have also been looking into homemade dog food with meat. Would it be ok to feed her the day biscuits in the morning and a homemade recipie at night? My main concern is that she will be lacking vitamins and nutrients. Thank you!

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! Why does your Vet want Lexi off beef? I would be careful with grain free diets as there is s huge issue with taurine deficiency is some of these diets that are causing heart disease in some dogs. There is no medical reason for a dog to eat grain free. I would only feed a raw diet if it is balanced by a Veterinary Nutritionist especially since your dog is a puppy and growing. It is VERY important to supply the correct ratios of calcium and phosphorus. Commercial dog foods that are managed by nutritionists are your safest bet. I would consult the Vet that recommended stopping beef as I do not have all Lexi's medical information to guide you. If you want to cook/feed raw please visit: https://secure.balanceit.com/ I wish you and Lexi the best!
