Dog had a tick for a short time. Is disease transmission likely?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | neutered | 2 years and 2 months old | 78 lbs

I found a brown dog tick on my dogs back between his shoulder blades. I believe the tick was on him an hour or hour and a half before it was noticed. I took the tick off with tweezers, and where the tick was did bleed. What do I need to watch for, and should I be worried that my dog had something transmitted from the tick? Attached are photos of the tick, and the area that was bit.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The short answer is most likely no. Most tick-borne diseases need the tick to be attached longer to be able to transmit them. However, these could transmit after a much shorter time attached. In reality, it is unlikely that you need to be worried at all. If you ever notice any signs of sickness such as inappetence, vomiting, diarrhea, pain and/or lameness, have him evaluated by a veterinarian then. Good luck and have a good night!
