Puppy stomach bloated from water in heat, but acting normal. Is it okay?

Hi My puppy has been drinking a lot of water lately since it has been really hot these few days. We noticed that his stomach is looking a bit bloated and tense. However, he is acting normal, eating well, and does not look like he is having pain in the stomach when touched. Is that ok? or should we be worried? Thank you

It can be normal that you see an increase in water consumption when it's hot outside. Because he is acting normal, eating well, and otherwise behaving normally, I wouldn't be too worried about it. Leo's stomach could be bloated from intestinal worms, which are common in puppies. Make sure he's up to date on his deworming treatments, giving him one if he's not. Now if he stops eating and stops acting normal, then I would be concerned and have him seen by a vet. Best of luck, I hope this helps!

8 week old puppies, even large breed ones, have pretty tiny stomachs, and they also have poor abdominal musculature development at this stage. Those 2 factors can cause you to really be able to see their abdomen bulging when the stomach is full or water or food. So that might be one reason you're seeing this. The other reason could be that Mishka has intestinal parasites. They are very common in young puppies, so if she hasn't been dewormed, this should be done, at least twice (3 - 4 weeks apart). It's also a good idea to have your vet check a stool sample. You can buy dewormer over the counter in most pet stores; follow the directions on the package.

I just took in five wk old puppy who's mother died...her stomach very bloated but she's very active and eats wet food well..
I would recommend a vet check to determine if there are nay underlying medical causes but the fact she eats well is a good sign. Monitor for regular stools and no pain or vomiting and ensure she is dewormed regularly with an appropriate puppy wormer (every 2-4 weeks depending on the product). Keep her isolated from other dogs (especially dog parks etc) until she is fully up to date with her vaccines

He may be over eating at times. He may need a diet change to something for a sensitive stomach that is easier to digest for him. Since he is acting normal, with a good appetite and no vomiting or diarrhea, you can try a sensitive stomach formula food or a limited ingredient food to see if that makes a difference. You should monitor his weight weekly to make sure there are no sudden changes as that can indication fluid build up from intestinal or heart disease. If you notice any vomiting or diarrhea, or the weight is consistently increasing with the bloating, then he should be seen by a vet.

It could be that Ranger has intestinal worms causing his belly to be bigger than usual. They can be very common in young dogs. His belly could also be bigger if he had a large meal. Because he isn't showing any other signs of bloat, then I wouldn't be too worried. Keep an eye on him, and if he does show signs of bloat, take him into a vet immediately. My puppy has a really big stomach she eats but not that much for her to have such a big stomach is that something I should be worried about? And also after I feed her, her stomach gets as hard as a rock is that normal?
If she is acting normal otherwise than it might just be that her stomach is full from the feeding. She could also have a parasite causing her stomach to be enlarged. Have a vet take a look at her to determine if she needs treatment. She may need to be dewormed with a broad spectrum dewormer.

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Boop by Petco. Abdominal distension can be due to organ enlargement, such as a full stomach, ie. if Remi ate a lot of food recently. Other options include fluid within the abdomen, which would be less common in a younger puppy. As long as Remi isn't acting abnormally, i.e. no vomiting or retching, no diarrhea, or excessive lethargy, I recommend monitoring him tonight. If he still seems bloated in the morning or isn't acting himself, he should be seen by a veterinarian. Your vet may recommend x-rays to look at his stomach and other organs. I hope this is helpful!

The most common signs of bloat are retching without bringing up any material and restlessness. Bloat is a broad term for both a simple gas or food distension of the stomach or a GDV (gastric dilation volvulus) where the stomach gets filled with air and twists on itself so that the stomach contents cannot be emptied. I highly doubt that your 6 week old puppy is experiencing a bloat at such a young age. More common causes of a round and more firm abdomen include a parasite infestation or simply a full stomach after eating. Drinking excessive amounts of water can indicate urinary tract diseases (infection, crystals, etc.), or could be a variation of normal as she is growing. If she also begins urinating large volumes frequently or you observe any blood in her urine, take her to the vet for an exam and urinalysis. If your puppy is lethargic or trying to vomit or retch, certainly speak with her vet immediately. Otherwise, determine how much food she should be eating by examining the char

If he is still eating and drinking with no vomiting and playful then it may be from a tummy ache. If he seems to be panting heavily or trying to vomiting and not eating, then it is time to worry. Since he is so big, skipping a meal will not harm him and this may give his stomach a chance to rest.

If her breathing is normal and gums are normal pink, then there is a good chance this is just a worm overload. Sometimes it takes 2 treatments done 2 weeks apart to get rid of worms in young puppies. Ascites would almost always cause a pet to be lethargic and act ill. As long as her energy is good and everything else is fine, it is ok to monitor her for now and have your vet check her for parasites when they get back out of town. Thanks for using Boop by Petco! A large belly in a puppy is not unusual and while sometimes this could be indicative of parasites, it does not have to be that necessarily. I think though that the possibility of this warrants a visit to your veterinarian to check for that. It is also a good idea to have your new pup evaluated by your veterinarian so that she can start on a preventative care plan including treating for parasites. Good luck and have a great day!
