My kitten's adult canine is in, but the baby tooth won't fall out.

Pet's info: Cat | Siamese | Male | unneutered | 5 lbs

I just noticed today that my kitten’s adult canines are coming in but his baby tooth has not fallen out yet. This is the case on both upper canines. Should I take him to the vet to have them extracted or since the adult tooth is still fairly small do you think I should wait a week or so to see if the baby tooth falls out?

I would hold off on taking Oliver in the vet just yet to see if his baby canines fall out on their own. If they do not fall out in a week or so, then yes I would take him into the vet to discuss having them extracted. Best of luck!

Yes, I would have Dolly seen by a vet for this retained baby tooth. It will likely need to be extracted under anesthesia so that the adult canine tooth can grow in correctly. I'd made an appointment for her with the vet this week. Good luck, I hope this helps!

Hi there! At five months old, his adult canines should still be in the process of coming in - so yes, it's very possible that the baby canine teeth may come out on their own sometime in the next few weeks. :) My personal rule of thumb is that if the baby canines haven't fallen out by 10-12 months of age, they should probably be extracted at that time to avoid causing problems with the adult teeth.

Hi, what you are seeing is his adult teeth coming in and his baby teeth haven't fallen out yet. this does not cause pain and is not a medical issue unless he gets to be over 1.5 years and they have not fallen out. The retained baby teeth can get food stuck in them and cause dental disease. I would not worry about it until his is older. Good luck, I hope this helps!

I'm not sure if this is my dog losing his baby teeth or if the adult teeth have come in and the baby teeth just haven't fallen out yet. Do I need to go see my local vet? You can clearly see both sets of teeth.
It looks like his adult canine teeth (the long "fangs") are still in the process of coming in, so the baby teeth may come out on their own by the time this is finished. If your pup is going to be neutered sometime soon, your vet can easily remove the baby teeth while he's asleep for the neuter. If not, I would continue to monitor. If the baby teeth haven't fallen out by the time he's a year old, then I would schedule an appointment to have them removed. They will cause problems with the adult teeth if they're allowed to stay in place much longer than that.

That appears to be a deciduous (baby) tooth. You can see the adult tooth near it and next to the other canine on the right side. If she will allow and you can do it safely, wipe the tooth with a piece of gauze. It should come away. Have her examined by your veterinarian tomorrow. She may need a dental x-ray to rule out retained roots.kittens will begin to lose teeth between 3-4 months of age. By 7 months, the adult teeth should be fully erupted.

Is this normal for how adult teeth will come in?
Yes. The adult canine tooth is coming in and will normally push that deciduous (“baby”) tooth out of the way and it will fall out. It can take a week or more for the process. Occasionally, that baby tooth remains and there are 2 teeth at that spot. Ideally, if that happens, the baby tooth should eventually be removed. Good observation. These are retained baby teeth. They should be out by now, but it looks like the permanent tooth did not push it out. These teeth do tend to cause problems, because it's easy for debris to get trapped in-between the two teeth and cause infection. For this reason, we usually recommend removal of the tooth. His baby canine hasn't fallen out and the adult tooth is growing behind it?
This can be a common issue in young dogs, especially of small breeds. If the canine tooth doesn't fall out by the time the adult tooth has grown in, we normally recommend removal of this tooth at the pet's spay or neuter. The tooth can be a site that easily gets infected or is easily broken, and this is the reason we recommend removal,though we do see dogs who live with the baby tooth and don't have problems with them. They are also an area where tartar quickly accumulates as they age.

That looks like it could be a retained deciduous (baby) tooth. It should have fallen out on its own at around 6 months of age. Ideally, your veterinarian should extract it to make sure the entire tooth comes out. If any root is left behind, it could lead to an infection.

I would give it some more time. They won't usually get an infection from not loosing their baby teeth right away. It sometimes takes a little more time before the baby teeth fall out. If they still haven't fallen out in a couple of months once all of his adult teeth have come in, I would have your vet take a look. Your vet will likely recommend to have them removed because long term they can cause crowding issues and infection. If you plan to neuter Ozzy and haven't already done so, they will likely recommend to have the baby teeth removed at this time. I hope this helps!
