My dog coughs and gags when running but has energy. What's wrong?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 1 year and 8 months old

I am wondering if panda has something stuck in his throat as when he runs he is coughing and dry wrenching he is still eating and full of energy he does have allergies but is on loratadine daily and antibiotics he hasn't been near any sick dogs

If Panda had something stuck in his throat, he wouldn't be eating because any object there would prevent him from swallowing. It could be that his allergies are causing him to cough, or he could be getting a respiratory infection. Keep an eye on him for the next couple of days, and if the cough continues, take him into the vet. Rest him to see if that helps with it. If he develops other symptoms such as anorexia, sneezing, nasal discharge, and/or lethargy, then I would take him into the vet sooner. Best of luck, I hope this helps!

It is characterized by a hacking gagging cough that may produce a white foamy material. If this is the case, he will likely need an antibiotic. This can be from a respiratory infection and excess drainage, she may have eaten something that irritated or scratched her throat if it was sharp or too big of a piece. Since she is coughing things up, it is best to have her checked by a vet to make sure she does not need antibiotics for an infection. In small dogs, collapsing trachea is a possibility for the type of cough you are noticing. If it was noticed suddenly though, then I would be much less suspicious of it. Another possible cause is an upper respiratory infection. These can happen quite suddenly and will have a cough and gag at the end of the cough similar to what you're describing. These infections are often treated successfully with antibiotics. Having something lodged in the throat is a possibility too; even if you don't know of anything that she could have eaten to cause this. It's worth taking her to the vet for an exam. They can help determine the cause and treat the problem before it gets worse. Usually, we can find the cause rather quickly. I hope that helps and your pup gets better soon.

I hate to hear your pet is coughing so much. Unfortunately, it's impossible to know the underlying cause of the coughing without a physical exam and possible radiographs. Pets can cough due to allergies, parasites, collapsing trachea, heart disease, lung disease, cancer, infections or something stuck in the throat. Treatment is different for each of these conditions. I recommend to have your pet examined by again the veterinarian. if a treatment doesn't work, it usually means the true cause of the coughing has not been discovered. It sounds like DanDan may be in a bit of distress and may have something stuck in his throat. Other causes could include irritation of the throat or lungs either from eating something, infection, etc. If he seems in distress and is continually trying to vomit, cough, or gag without results, bringing him to a vet ASAP for an exam is best, especially if he is also lethargic and not acting himself.
