My small dog is aggressive towards other dogs. Can she be socialized?

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkipoo | Female | spayed | 7 years and 5 months old | 7 lbs

My 6yr old, 7lb Yorkiepoo does not like other dogs, and goes after most of them, barking and growling. And would attack them if I let her. Is there any way to socialize this otherwise very smart and wonderful little dog?

I would make an appointment with a behavioral specialist. Aggression is never a behavior I recommend owners work with on their own because of the risks involved both to you and other dogs. A behavioral specialist can work with Peanut on her aggression issues, and can slowly introduce her safely to other dogs in hopes of socializing her. Speak to your vet about a referral to one. Hi there! A dog I recently purchased from a shelter has shown aggressive behaviour ( attacking an unprovoked dog) any advice would be great!
That's not good. I never recommend owners work with aggressive behavior on their own due to safety risks. I would speak to Teddy's vet about a referral to a professional behavioral expert for training. Do not allow him off leash around other dogs when you are in public, and don't have other dogs come over to your home until the trainer feels it's safe. I hope this helps!

Hello! I've found my dog is absolutely terrified of other dogs, and I'm not too sure why. She's never been attacked, and is incredibly loving towards all humans. Do you have any tips on how to help her get more comfortable with dogs?
Maisy may not have been properly socialized around other dogs, and if she isn't a confident dog, she will react with fear around other dogs. Unfortunately, fear in dogs can come out as aggression, so it would be a good idea to start socializing her now to prevent this from happening. You can speak to your vet about getting her enrolled with a behavioral expert to work on this behavior. The expert can introduce her to other dogs in a safe situation, working on socialization skills, and teaching her that she does not have to be afraid of them.

I'm sorry to hear Asha isn't responding well. If you've only worked with a trainer, i would suggest seeking out a veterinary behaviorist instead. They are veterinarians that specialize specifically in behavior, and work on both medication and training adjustment to help with behavioral issues such as aggression. It may be that a vet behaviorist can help adjust Asha's medication and provide better training options and desensitization that is better. As with any issue, it does take time, and complex issues such as aggression can sometimes take a very long time, or only see small improvement instead. It could be that Asha is never truly comfortable with other pets and people, but a complete evaluation from a professional is needed to determine this. Not every dog likes another, but they shouldn't immediately attack when coming into contact with another dog. Dogs can be aggressive for a number of reasons including territorial aggression, aggression over puppies, aggression over resources (including people), and communication mismatches. While she's been with trainers, that doesn't mean she's been socialized properly. Many trainers are great at teaching the basics of obedience, but may not know how to handle aggression behaviors or socialization experiences. It would be in your dog's best interest to get into contact with a certified veterinary behaviorist who can work on behavioral modification in conjunction with health care and medication treatment to try and get her at least ignoring other dogs. In cases where aggression is bad, the end-goal is usually a dog that will ignore other pets on walks, rather than one that is at the park playing.

It sounds like Suzy is dog aggressive, and I would speak to your vet about a referral to a professional behavior expert. I never recommend owners try to train aggressive behaviors on their own because it can be dangerous and the owner can get hurt. This is something that is best left to the professionals. It is definitely something that needs to be worked on immediately with a trainer, as she could hurt another dog or get very hurt herself if she goes after a big dog. Dog aggression is relatively common and while there are training techniques to reduce dog aggression it can be difficult. If you can identify certain triggers: i.e. if she is only aggressive when she is at home, or when she is on a leash, it can be easier to work on training her to 'ignore' other dogs or desensitization. I would recommend seeing a behaviorist - your veterinarian would likely be able to recommend someone in your area. Until you are able to work on some training I would recommend avoiding contact with other dogs so that there are no injuries.

Unfortunately, I'm not sure what behaviors you are referring to in terms of Panda. I'm not sure if she is aggressive to other dogs, or simply very frightened by them. If she is aggressive, I recommend getting a referral to a professional behavioral expert. I never advise owners to train aggressive dogs on their own due to safely reasons. It can be very dangerous to work with an aggressive dog, and that is best left to a professional. I'm afraid this is a really broad question for us to try and address in a forum like this :) Growling and showing teeth indicates that Penelope is uncomfortable or afraid when she's around other people and dogs, so there's no simple or easy treatment for this issue. In many cases, it is possible to help these dogs become more comfortable with people and animals over time, but you really need a professional who can work with you in person in order to do this safely without risking making things worse. I would recommend getting in touch with a veterinary behaviorist or a good reward-based trainer in your area who can evaluate her in person and help you put together a detailed plan to help her. Poor Panda! Unfortunately she had a very traumatizing event during a very crucial period of socialization in her life. I would not consider her a waste of money. She could be fearful reactive (I have one of these) that acts so aggressive to try to scare everyone away because she is scared to death. I don't like training at dog parks. The dogs are not controlled and it is likely to end up with her having another bad experience. Not everyone understands dog to dog behavior, so there can be fights at dog parks. I would NOT recommend a shock collar. Her response is most likely fear, and we should not punish fear. Imagine if you fell off a roller coaster (major injuries but survived) when you were a young child, would you want to ride a roller coaster again? I am sorry that you have not have luck with trainers. First, you might need to reconsider what you want Panda to do. Do you want her to go for walks where she might see another dog?
