My turtle laid one egg and stopped. Should I take her to the vet for egg-binding?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My African sideneck turtle laid one egg two to three days ago. Previously, it was not know she was a female, and a nesting sight was provided. However, she has not laid another egg and the nesting sight seems to have been rejected. She is eating normally, and is eating worms andbthe occasional feeder fish along with her pellet food. She is perfectly active, even more so now. What should i do? Should i be worried and take her to a vet

An adult sideneck female will lay clutches numbering 6 to over 40 eggs at a time. Clutch size will depend on age, size and overall health. They will retain eggs until a suitable nesting site is located. This can lead to becoming egg bound which can be life threatening. She does not need to mate in order to lay eggs. Ideally, she should be examined, and x-rayed, by your veterinarian or an experienced herp vet to confirm whether or not she is retaining eggs.
