My puppy has an external fixator. How do I care for her leg at home?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Poodle | Female | unspayed | 6.4 lbs

My puppy just had and external fixation on her leg. I was not given any advice on at home care for this other then limited to no mobility. Is there anything I need to do at home for it?

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your question. External fixators are typically well tolerated and you should not have to do much with this other than rest Nala until the fracture heals. If you notice discharge around the pins, you can use a cotton swab that is moist with water or hydrogen peroxide and wipe around the base of the pin that contacts the skin to keep it clean. Otherwise, keep Nala rested and follow the veterinarian's instructions for when to return for recheck appointments. I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further.
