My rat has a bruise weeks after lump removal surgery. Is it normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Hi my pet rat had a sarcoma lump removed from her side just over 3 weeks ago. She's healing great the incision site has almost gone. But last night what looks like a bruise has appeared around the operation site it's not swollen. Is this normal to occur weeks after the operation? She's in a one level cage as she recovers from the operation so I don't think she has fallen and hurt it that way. Any advice would be greatly appreciated as it has worried me seeing this. Thanku Lynsey

Usually once the incision has healed you would not expect further changes to the skin. Blood vessels beneath the skin may have been damaged leading to bleeding and bruising, or she may have rubbed the still delicate tissue. To be sure I would take her back to the vet so they can check the site and ensure it does not require any treatment.
