Why is my senior cat gaining weight, bloated, and has dry, flaky fur?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 15 years and 1 month old

My 15 year old cat seems to be gaining weight. Her fur is soft and looks like fish scales. However her tummy is sometimes looking bloated. She eats and drinks as normal. Grooming also normal and no medical issues. I have been giving her wet food 3 times a week. She eats senior dry food on other days. Bowel movements ok. Should i add anything to her diet?.Should i be concerned?.thanks

Hi there. It's possible that she's simply gaining weight as she gets older, especially if she's not as active now as she used to be or if she's getting more food than in the past. But, an enlarged abdomen could also be caused by heart disease, liver disease, FIP (feline infectious peritonitis), or an abdominal tumor of some kind. These things are less likely if she is acting completely normal, but to be on the safe side, it would be a good idea to have her seen by a vet when you are able to. He/she can palpate her abdomen to check for any abnormalities, and may recommend x-rays or other testing if there are any concerns.
