Why does my dog dry heave when startled or late at night?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | unspayed | 10 lbs

My dog Novi Lynn tends to dry heave when she gets startled(I think) it happens more like fern when she’s woken up from a nap. Recently I noticed it’s be more persistent late night, and I would say it only occurs maybe twice a week if at all. I know there are some serious conditions contributes to dry heaving, but I would rather not just assume. Thanks for the help if you are able ^_^

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If you mean gagging or regurgitating this can happen more often at night when the stomach is most empty and stomach acid is at its highest. Since it is so infrequent and Novi is otherwise happy and eating well, I’m not panicked. Consider trying famotidine (Pepcid AC). Ask your vet about dosing and if it’s safe to try. Best of luck to you and Novi.
