My dog's eyes are goopy and hard to open. Can I use human eye wash?

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | neutered | 14 years and 1 month old | 10 lbs

Hi my dog is 14 years old and in stage 4 kidney disease. He has been rubbing at his eyes for a couple of weeks, but yesterday he woke up with yellowish goop in his eyes. His eyes are really bothering him, and he is having a hard time opening them. He often has bad allergies. Do you know what I can do to help him? Can I put human eye wash in his eyes to help? Thank you

Poor Boomer! It sounds like he may have an eye infection. You can flush his eyes with a sterile saline solution, but he ultimately has to see a vet for treatment. Leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. Please take him into the vet first thing Monday to have his eyes examined and treated. Best of luck!

If you just need to remove the eye discharge, you can put warm water on a cotton ball and gently wipe the inside corner of the eye. If the discharge quickly returns or you notice discharge in the eye as well, you can use any sterile saline eye wash made for humans. If the discharge is not resolving after a couple of day or is getting worse at any point, then I would have your veterinarian recheck the eye and determine if any medication is needed to resolve the problem. My dogs eye is red and watery a little swollen. I believe its pink eye. Is this treatable at home or is a vet visit necessary?
It looks as Bo is suffering from an eye infection, it is relatively common in dogs. you will need to take him to the vet the first chance you get, the vet will check the eyes, if it is indeed a simple eye infection your vet will prescribe an antibiotic eye drops that will probably solve the problem in no time.

Occasionally his eyes "weep" a very small amount, he always has eye "boogers" they range from a normal whiteish to reddish brown. My vet told me its allergies but could it be conjunctivitis? What do I do for his eyes? Im assuming it's not comfortable
If he's not squinting his eyelids or pawing at his face, its probably not terribly bothersome, though of course I can't speak for him regarding his comfort level. I recommend you flush his eyes daily with something like this: https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/vetericyn-plus-eye-wash-for-dogs and then try applying this a couple of times a day for a few days. https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/vetericyn-ophthalmic-pet-gel# this may help if he has some mild conjunctivitis or irritation. You can also talk to your vet about trying him on an antihistamine for possible allergies. Over the counter antihistamines are not labeled for use in dogs, so I would encourage you to talk to your vet about it. My dog is saringe fed so when I was feeding him some of the food got in his eye and I got the food out but he's squinting a little more then the other eye is there anything I can do to help it?
Thanks for using Boop by Petco! Focal irritation to the eye can cause a defect on the cornea, leading to eye irritation. I would recommend flushing your dog’s eye out with plain saline eye rinse (not anything like visine!) and then monitoring the eye. If it is red, has discharge, or he’s holding it closed, it could indicate a corneal scratch, which could be diagnosed and treated by your veterinarian. Good luck!

You can get a saline eye wash to clean his eyes but if his eyes are red and watery he may have an infection or allergies. In that case, he should be examined by a vet for treatment. He may need an antibiotic, antihistamine, or corticosteroid to help treat his problem.

How can I treat my dogs eye at home until I can get into a vet? I called thr local vet today and they are all booked up.
At best, you can use a warm washcloth to keep the eye clear of discharge and place an e-collar on him to prevent pawing or rubbing. There are no OTC medications you can use and treatment would not be recommended without a diagnosis. If you can't get in to see your veterinarian, consider a visit to the local veterinary ER. It may cost more, but potential eye infections or injuries should be diagnosed and treated as soon as possible.

With the eyes squinting I worry that they are painful. I would encourage you to have him evaluated by your veterinarian as soon as possible. Poor Blaze! I'm sorry to hear that he's having a problem with is eye. Squinting, excessive draining, and a "glazed" look can be caused by an eye infection, or by an injury to the eye such as a corneal scratch or ulcer. He will need an eye exam by your vet to diagnose the problem, and will probably need prescription meds to treat it effectively - so it's good that you're planning to take him in for a visit when you can. In the meantime, I would not recommend using any type of ointment or medication in th eye until you can see the vet to find out what's wrong - eyes are delicate, and you can accidentally make the problem worse by treating with something inappropriate. You can use plain saline eye wash to gently rinse his eye, if he'll let you, and use a warm washcloth or cotton ball to wipe away the discharge if it seems to be bothering him. This will not treat the underlying problem, but may help to make him a bit more comfortable until you are able to see the vet.

He can have a possible infection or conjunctivitis since it is affected both eyes. Since the discharge is getting worse and he does not want to open his eyes, it is best he sees a vet to determine if there is a scratch on the cornea or just an infection. There is topical antibiotics +/- a steroid to help clear them. The only thing you can do at home is rinse with sterile eye wash and try to apply a warm compress to help with the swelling.

Judging from the pictures and your description, I suspect that what you are seeing is due to an eye infection, irritation or dry eye. If you are unable to get to your veterinarian right away, there are over the counter drops that you can use. I've recommended Systane eye drops in the past to clients and that helps lubricate the eyes quite well. If this is infections, however, antibiotic eye medication will be needed so you will need to have Leah seen by a veterinarian to have antibiotic eye medication prescribed. I hope this helps!
