Why is my cat meowing and mellow after moving? Is this normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 4 years and 7 months old

We just moved into a new house on Thursday and had a rough time getting Finn in a carrier. After we got to the new house and let him out he has been off and on meowing for 3 days now and mostly at night. He never meowed, and never wanted to be petted and if you did he would bite and scratch you. You try to pick him up and he hissed. Now he lets us pet him. When he meows I can now pick him up and pet him. It seems to calm him. Is this normal behavior? Will he stay more mellow now?

This can be normal behavior. Dogs can take about 2 weeks to get used to things while cats can take a bit longer. Give him attention, play with him and keep things out that are his. He may stay mellow, he may not but it is normal for them to have a behavioral change temporarily and sometimes permanent with a move.
