Cat sick after move: sneezing, eye pus, breathing issues. Is it URI?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Russian Blue | Male | neutered | 8 years and 7 months old

Hello So my cat has gotten very sick over the last week- we have just moved to a new house and he bagan showing cold symptoms - sneezing, weeping eyes and being lethargic. Now he can hardly open his eye as a layer of puss covers it and is quite inflamed, he has trouble breathing, is vomiting and coughs like he has whooping cough. It seems like a upper respiratory infection. I’m calling the mobile vet tomorrow as we live in a regional village. I would appreciate any advice. Thank you

This is likely due to an upper respiratory infection. These are often due to a virus that is usually self-limiting (will go away on its own - much like a cold with people). These can become worse and complicated with bacterial infections and it sounds like Kubusz has a rather severe infection. It's definitely good that the vet is coming to make an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan. For now, make sure he is comfortable and free of any stressful situations. These infections often happen in times of stress, so if there are new stressors in the environment, then try your best to remove them. You can help relieve congestion by giving a steam bath at home. Below is a link to an article that explains this and has helpful info about cat upper respiratory disease. http://www.wikihow.com/Help-Your-Cat-Breathe-Easier I hope that helps and Kubusz gets better soon.
