My cat on Prednisone has excess thirst and urination. Is it the meds?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Mediumhair | Female | spayed | 7 lbs

Sadie 12 yrs rescue. Diagnosed with intestinal inflammation 3 yrs ago. On Prednisolone liquid 2xday. Did good for a while. Current symptoms: weight loss, poops only every 2-3days(hard), hair loss haunches appears to be from licking, shivers (no pattern), excess thirst and urination now in livingroom not in box (which is always clean). Considered putting her down but she is my baby. Plan to ask my vet to stop the medication. Seems only option from my point of view. Would like a second opinion.

I'm so sorry to hear that Sadie is not doing well. Cats very rarely develop the side effects of increases in thirst and urination that dogs and people do while they are taking Prednisone, so I would be suspicious of another problem going on. I would recommend having your veterinarian check urine and blood samples on Sadie to evaluate for another problem before considering stopping Prednisone. Hopefully your veterinarian is able to find a solution to the problem! Good luck! I hope that was helpful. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
