My young pregnant cat stopped eating. Is this normal before birth?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | unspayed

Hello, I'm so sorry to bother you but I really need help. I'm about to have a panic attack because our cat that we're sure is under a year old is pregnant and she's stopped eating. I don't know if she and her babies will be okay. It happened before we could get her spayed. We're a highly poor family and she's just a kitten that called out to me from the streets so I took her in. I'm so worried about Squeaker, please please help. It's her first litter ever and she's still a kitten herself.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It depends on how far along Squeaker is. If she is close to her due date, she could have stopped eating because she is ready to give birth. If not, then there may be other medical issues going on. Without an exam it is hard to say. I would offer her kitten food- canned and dry- and continue to monitor her. If she doesn’t eat for longer than 24 hours, I recommend taking her to a vet for an exam. It is not uncommon for young cats to get pregnant and it doesn’t always mean there will be a problem with delivery. Good luck and kisses to Squeaker!
