Dog paw swollen after injury, no pain. Is it still infected?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Staffordshire Terrier | Male | unneutered | 3 years and 8 months old | 88.2 lbs

I own a dog.Two weeks ago his paw started swelling, became worse in a day and he could barely walk.Same day in the evening I found a broken glass(cca 1cm)between his digital and metacarpal pads.Vet gave him antibiotics day after and said it would get better within a week. After 3-4 days I noticed a forming fistula between his "fingers" on the dorsal side of the paw.It became big and bursted, vet cleaned the wound and the fistula is gone, but his paw keeps swelling,it doesn't hurt. What should i do?

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. I would make sure that you are giving an anti-inflammatory. This also may still be an infection that did not respond to previous antibiotics. I would recommend discussing this further with the veterinarian as this may need further testing such as a culture to see if there is a resistant bacteria. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further.

It sounds like his foot is infected. If there is not significant improvement after a few days of antibiotics, you should call your vet and give him/her an update. Your vet may want to culture the discharge and/or a biopsy to determine the exact cause and best way to treat. He may need a different antibiotic or other medications depending on the cause. You can also soak the paw in a warm Epsom salt solution and see if that helps.
