My small dog isn't eating and has allergies. When to see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Papillon | Male | neutered | 3 years and 4 months old | 9 lbs

For the last 3 weeks, Slugger has not eaten his dinner on a regular basis. He has always been an eater, never skipping a meal. He has always eaten Fromm's grain free 4 gold star..1/4 cup 2 times/day. Since Sunday, he has only eaten dinner twice. At what point should I be concerned, since he is so small? His allergies have been bothering him with the pollen and I have been giving him hydroxyzine as needed, but just started it a week ago. Nothing else in behavior, routine, etc. has changed.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Though it doesn’t sound like an emergency, I would consider taking Slugger in to the vet in the next few weeks. It could be nothing but a change in appetite or caloric beedes but could also signal a low grade pancreatitis or other problem. A blood test can screen for this. Best of luck to you and Slugger!
