My puppy needs walks, but I can only do one. Extended walk or play?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 4 months and 14 days old | 50 lbs

What length of walk would be ideal for Sarah at this point in time also sometimes I work weird hours so I can't always make either the morning or the evening walk. I can always make at least one or the other but my neighborhoods not exactly the best to walk in after Dark. Therefore on days that I know I'm not going to be able to make the other walk with an extended walk be appropriate or just play with her more with in our yard

Puppies should be walked five minutes for every month of age, so in Sara's case, she should be walked for twenty minutes twice a day. If you cannot take her out twice a day, then I would make time to play with her more in the yard instead of taking her for an extended walk. Keep the walk and play time separate, as too much exercise too young can and does have an adverse effect on a puppy's growth. Best of luck, I hope this helps!

It really depends on the age of your puppy, breed, and personality. Self Directed Play is the best thing for growing puppies so the majority of his exercise should be free play. If he shows any fatigue, flops down, refuses to walk, you should listen to him and let him rest. Going on your walks and letting him socialize and explore is fine as long as he doesn't seem to get too tired.

It really depends on the individual puppy but a few short walks is good for a 2 month old puppy. You can gradually increase the number of walks and the distance as the puppy ages. Do not over-exercise while the puppy is growing. Besides walking, you will need interact and play with the puppy multiple times a day. You can get various puppy toys to encourage play and let the puppy decide how long he wants to play. When he seems tired or not interested than stop and give him a break.

12 week old American Brittany. Central NJ encased in cold and hard show. Will walk on snow but refuses to walk to the nearby park where he totally walked pre-storms last week. Worried he's not getting much exercise. What to do so?
Given that he is only 12 weeks old and likely not fully vaccinated, he should not be going on long walks anyway to places where lots of dogs frequent. At 12 weeks of age, he only needs 15 minutes of exercise twice a day, and he shouldn't be taken to any place where dogs of unknown vaccine status go because of the risk of serious disease. I wold keep him in your backyard for now for exercise until he is fully vaccinated. It won't hurt him to cut back on exercise at the moment.

Puppies will gain a lot of weight in the first couple months of life, and it's never recommended to worry about their weight at a young age. In addition, he should not be talking long walks, at most he will need 10 minutes of exercise twice a day. A puppy should get 5 minutes of exercise twice a day for every month of age, i.e. at 3 months 15 minutes, 4 months 20 minutes, etc. I would not talk him on walks just yet given that he is fully vaccinated. You can play with him in your yard, but do not worry about his weight and do not over exercise him. Too much exercise will be detrimental to his growth.

Exercise for puppies should be calculated as 5 minutes per month of life twice daily. For a puppy Roddy's age, that's 15 minutes twice a day. If the loop is only 10 minutes, even if you go three times a day, that's fine. As he gets older, you can increase his exercise time. I hope this helps!

This is a great question! Yes, there is a concern that dogs who aren't fully grown shouldn't have too much exercise because it can have negative effects on their growth. The amount of exercise a dog of Oly's age should get is five minutes for every month of age; therefore, he should be getting at least 40 minutes of exercise twice a day. You can add on five minutes for each month of age to his exercise, and I would wait to do such long walks until he is fully grown (around 18 months of age). I would recommend scaling back on these long walks for now, and sticking to 40 minutes twice a day. I hope this helps!

A puppy should get five minutes of strenuous exercise per month of age twice a day. At two months of age, Blu can have 10 minutes of exercise twice a day. You can get him some toys he can play with himself, such as a Kong toy. They are practically indestructible, and you can fill it with treats that he needs to figure out how to get out. Best of luck.

I have a 9 months old GSD (rescued 5 months ago). I can't seem to figure out exactly how long I should walk her. Once or twice around the block isn't enough. And 50 minutes proved to be too much.
German Shepherds are high energy dogs, especially as puppies. Ellie may need more vigorous exercise than just walking - although walking is great - such as 30 minutes of fetch in the backyard or secure (fenced) park area. With respect to walking, I would consider 3 walks of 30 - 40 minutes each to be sufficient. You might also investigate doggy day care in your area, to help her get some additional exercise and play time.
