Should I give my dog low sodium chicken broth for an upset stomach?

Does low sodium chicken broth help settle dogs stomachs the same way boiled chicken does?

The low sodium chicken broth can add an extra source of hydration for a dog with an upset stomach, but the boiled chicken is what it is recommended to help settle a dog's stomach as part of a bland diet. He needs the protein and other nutrients from the chicken, which the broth would not provide. To answer your question, it can be used with the chicken to help settle a dog's stomach, but it should not be used instead of the chicken. I hope this helps!

It is fine to use some of the chicken broth for flavoring on dog food. Just make sure there was no aggressive seasoning or excessive salt used. The best broth for dogs would be non seasoned or low salt broth. Also you would want to skim out the fat if there is a lot of it or let it set up in the fridge first so you can remove the larger fat layer. Giving cooked chicken is also no problem as a treat. Just make sure the majority of the diet is dog food as that is made balanced for dogs. I hope this helps and thank you for using Boop by Petco!

Can i put chickem soup on my dog's dry food not salty soup i made it especially for her ?
Yes you can but just low sodium chicken broth would be better. With the noodles and chicken added it is going to take her caloric intake too high if you do this continuously. Obesity in pets is a huge problem and with her being so young you don't want to get her overweight. Broth alone is very low in calories and dogs still enjoy the flavor. So, yes you can but I would do it sparingly. Hope this helps.

Why is it when dogs have upset stomachs or problems keeping food down vets recommend a bland diet of boiled chicken and white rice? Wouldn’t the sudden switch to human food cause more problems?
Chicken and rice is very bland and easy to digest, similar to humans eating crackers and ginger ale when we don't feel well. Chicken and rice are both also very common ingredients in many dogs foods, so they aren't really "human foods" - dogs tolerate them just fine, also. :)

My dog will not eat her food is it doesn’t smell like human food. I’ve been putting beef broth in her food but I’m consern about her sodium intake. I was curious is this was a good solution. Or should I switch to pedialite.
Thank you for contacting Boop by Petco with your question about Belle. You can use a low sodium beef broth, but she really should be eating her dog food alone. I would keep decreasing the amount of beef broth you put into her food until she is eating the dog food alone. She really should not be having it, so it's best to try to wean her off of it. Hi and thanks for using Boop by Petco! Sorry to hear about Chico. Chicken broth is typically a very low protein source. I think it's a good idea to add this to try to entice Chico's appetite. Serving the food warmed up may help bring out the aroma and flavor also. There is a new kidney supplement for dogs in kidney failure but I can't think of the name of it. It starts with Nef..... I believe. Might be worth asking your veterinarian about. Good luck with Chico. Another thing you can try is a different carbohydrate such as pasta to entice Chico.

A small amount of pepper in chicken stock is not a cause for concern. Low sodium chicken broths can be used in small amounts, but assure that the stock or broth has the lowest sodium amount possible and does not contain garlic or onions, as both are toxic to dogs.

I would advise boiled chicken over roast chicken to use as treats. The roast chicken can have oils, and butters on it which are high in fat and can cause health problems. These health problems can lead to gastrointestinal upset such a pancreatitis.

I would not add chicken soup to her food as there is a lot of salt in the broth. You can add canned dog food to her diet for variety. I recommend using the same brand as the dry dog food you are feeding. Safe human foods are boiled chicken and boiled beef but canned dog food has the proper balance of vitamins and minerals. My dog has had an upset stomach for 72 hours, not eating or drinking much accompanied by being sick. Is it best to fast him or still offer small portions of chicken?
Poor Louie! I'm sorry to hear that he's sick. My general rule of thumb with vomiting and not eating much is that if it goes on for more than 24 hours, a vet visit is warranted. So if this has been going on for three days now, I would really recommend having him seen by a veterinarian today rather than continuing to try and manage at home, since I would be concerned that he has something more serious going on than a simple upset stomach. If you're not able to get him in to an emergency clinic today, then it's probably best to continue offering small amounts of something bland such as plain boiled chicken every few hours until you are able to see the vet. But I would focus on finding a way to have him seen as soon as possible.

Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in Luna's normal diet. If she vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. Stop giving her food like carne burritos and bologna. They are not healthy for her and cause GI upset. She doesn't need bread either.
