Dog ear infection: Are ear drops safe or should I just clean the ears?

Hi, Val has a chronic ear infection caused by cocci and received Mometavet ear drops, which I am hesitant to use as I learned that it may cause deafness. Can I just clean the ears routinely? Or use a more holistic approach? Also, is cocci short for Staphylococcus or coccidia streptococcus?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! All of the topical ear drops have the risk for ototoxicity which would cause deafness. If Val isn't suffering you can just try cleaning her ears every other day. But it may not clear a severe bacterial ear infection. Cocci just indicates the shape of the bacteria, we do not know the exact type of bacteria. It wouldn't be coccidia as that is a GI protozoal parasite. I wish you and Val the best!
