My dog has a torn ACL. How do I choose between TPLO and LSS?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My dog tore her ACL and needs surgery. My vet is pushing us to do TPLO but I have heard bad things about it and am leaning toward LSS. I have done a lot of research and talked to people in my dog rescue who have had their boxers have LSS and it was successful. I feel torn as to what surgery to choose. My dog is 5-6 years old and weights 60lbs. She is not overally active. Could you help me?

Either surgery could be successful, but TPLO has a better success rate in larger dogs. There are some studies that show that dogs that have had a TPLO put more weight on the leg after surgery and have better long term outcomes. One benefit to the lateral fabellar suture technique is that it tends to be less expensive. Ultimately it is your decision to make, and I would trust the surgeon’s expertise as well.
