My puppy won't jump and struggles with his hind legs. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Male | unneutered | 8 months and 30 days old | 17 lbs

Hi! My puppy has suddenly stopped jumping up on me. He seems to be having trouble standing on his back legs for some reason. He attempts to jump up but only goes half way and then resorts to sitting. He’s not limping when he walks or runs. He’s a 9 month old golden retriever male. Should I be worried!?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Benelly! If it doesn't resolve with rest I would have him looked at by your Vet. Possibilities are a back strain or sprain, Lyme disease, or hip dysplasia. An exam and hip X-rays could help determine what might be going on. Try resting him for a few days and if there is no improvement have him seen early next week. I wish Benelly a speedy recovery!
