Why is my senior German Shepherd chewing fur & skin? Vet won't work.

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | unneutered | 10 years and 9 months old | 83 lbs

Hi i have a 10 year old german shepherd male and lately he has been constantly chewing on his skin and pulling out his fur. We have tried taking him to a vet but it is very hard as he won’t let the veterinarian go anywhere near him. We have bought different shampoos and have got him medication but none of it seems to be working. Would you be able to help?

I would recommend sedation and skin biopsies as the safest and fastest way to identify the underlying cause in such a case where routine examination is not practical or safe and the conventional shampoos and parasite medications have not improved his condition. It is likely to cost significantly more and allow the condition to worsen by keep trying various remedies without any indication as the nature of the itching
