My dog's rear knee is grinding. What could be causing this pain?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | unspayed | 27 lbs

I recently adopted a 9 month old husky mix who has megaesphagus. She also is partially blind. When i adopted her she was underweight from regurgitating due to the megaE. I figured that that is why she was walking oddly. But she is still. I was checking her joints today and her right rear knee is grinding. What does this mean?

Hi there. If you feel a grinding or clicking in the joint when you move it, this is usually a sign of a problem with the joint cartilage. This could be caused by arthritis, or some other type of orthopedic injury or abnormality such as a luxating patella or a torn cranial cruciate ligament. I would recommend taking Sky to the vet when you are able to, so that this can be further assessed. Your veterinarian can do an orthopedic exam and may also recommend x-rays or other testing if needed to determine what is causing the grinding. If Sky seems painful or uncomfortable, she may need to be started on a glucosamine/chondroitin joint supplement or an anti-inflammatory medication to help with her comfort and mobility.
