Puppy neutered: Tummy growling, can I feed him before 5 hours?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 6 months and 1 day old | 14.4 lbs

My puppy just got neutered and I was told not to feed him for 5 hours but his tummy is growling a lot. Should I wait it out?

Poor guy. I would wait it out if you can because typically post neuter pets are a bit nauseous and more likely to vomit if given food too early. If he absolutely cannot hold out then you can offer a small amount of food (perhaps 1/4 the amount) in an hour or two. He will be ok and can have food soon. Best wishes with your puppy Toffee and take care!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The tummy growling may not be due to hunger but gas and fluid moving through the small intestines. Anesthesia can cause nausea and feeding too soon may cause vomiting. I’d recommend following your vets recommendations. I wish you the best!
