My dog had FHO. Can he lay on his surgery hip during recovery?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 1 year and 8 months old | 43 lbs

My dog had an FHO tuesday and hes doing well. My concern is whetherbi should let him lay on his surgery hip or not. Hes tried doing it a few times and ive caught him, but one time he did it and i quickly made him switch sides when i noticed, but he didnt whine or anything when he was laying on it. I know hes sore from laying down on one side only, so my question is if i can let him lay down on his surgery hip or if i should be strict about not doing so?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If Gus wants to lay on the incision that is ok. Continue to monitor the area for any heat, swelling, redness, or discharge. If you notice it, take him back to the vet. Also, continue to restrict his activity for as long as the vet said so the incision can heal. Good luck and kisses to Gus!
