My cat's abscess burst. Is the pus dangerous to my child or me?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Mediumhair | Male | unneutered | 15 lbs

My cat had an abcess. Well my two year old grabbed his neck and I think it caused it to burst. I cleaned the wound. He goes to vet tomorrow. My concern is I don't know if my son got any pus on his hands or if he put his hands in his mouth. Is this abcess dangerous to my children or myself?

It's usually not dangerous to have the pus in contact with your skin as long as there are no open wounds. There is a concern if it got in his mouth, because it could cause a stomach or intestinal infection. As long as he was cleaned well with soap and water he should be fine. I reccomend also asking your pediatrician about this in case there are other concerns. For Kitty, it's best to flush the wound with clean water for five minutes. Do this at-least once a day. I do not recommend putting any creams, or antiseptics in the wound. Your vet may advise additional treatment after evaluating the wound. I hope that helps and Kitty gets better soon.
