Why is my dog whimpering, circling, and sucking in his stomach?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 6 years and 7 months old

My dog started eating grass when I let him out. I let him back in and gave him a treat. After he ate it, he started whimpering, walking strangely around in circles, and sucking in his stomach. He has had these treats before. I let him outside so he could throw up if he needed to or use the bathroom even though he had just gone when I let him out before. Now he is inside and is still walking around and having trouble getting up when he lays down: this is unusual behavior. What should I do?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Please have Butch seen immediately by a veterinarian as he sounds like he is exhibiting the clinical signs of GDV (gastric dilitation with volvulus), commonly referred to as bloat. If this is what he has, it is life-threatening, so it is better to have him seen to know whether he does have it or not. Hope this helps and that Butch is okay!
