My Sharpei's eye is white and lumpy. Is it Sharpei fever or steroids?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chinese Shar-Pei | Female | spayed | 13 lbs

My 3 year old Chinese sharpei has experienced sharpei fever, due to this her liver and kidneys are closing down and she is on heavy steroids to try save her life. She has been having problems with her eyes though and the vet has given us eye drops to put in, though yesterday her eye came out in a massive lump and her eye is all white. Does anyone know what could have caused this? We are trying everything possible as we are not wanting to have her to be put down

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I ams orry that Anya has Shar- Pei fever and is feeling unwell. The image is hard to address as it is blurry however it doesn't appear the eye is proptosed. The white part is hard to see in the image, but could be due to ulcers, or could be pus inside her eye-ball, or inflammation in her eye-ball. Causes could be due to the fact that she needs high doses of steroids for her disease, which cause her to be more likely to get an infection. There could also be deposits in her eye. I would recommend having her seen by your vet to get a better look, and to look inside the eye. It is very hard to make an assessment of her based on the image you posted. Best of luck with Anya and I hope she feels better soon!
