My canary finished meds but is still puffed and sleepy. Is she recovering?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Unknown - Bird | Female | unspayed

My canary's cloaca (anus) was swelled & she was clearly sick. (I think) the vet said it was infected at an advanced state & prescribed antibiotics: every day 10 drops for 2 weeks. There was immediate improvement. 2 weeks have passed, she perked up and the swelling is gone. But now she seems sleepy, puffs up her feathers & stays perched on one leg quite often throughout the day. She eats and drinks. Is this just her recovering? How should I care for a sick bird? She's on multivitamins now.

Hi there! So sorry about your Sonya. She may be recovering as there was an improvement. However, when she was sickly prior to the vet visit, was she displaying the same behavior she is now? Was she fluffed up and perching on one leg before! If not, she may still be not feeling well. It would be a good idea to bring her in for a recheck. Let the vet take a look and make sure things are improving. If the vet suspects infection, and these antibiotics aren't really working as well as he/she would like, a culture may be recommended if the cloaca to check for vacteria/viruses, etc. to make sure the medications prescribed are appropriate.
