Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The female tick falls off the host (dog, cat, person) after it is full of blood to lay their eggs. The male and female mate ON the host. Depending on the tick species the full life cycle takes 2 months to complete. The females tend to lay the eggs in the spring and the larva feed and molt and turn to nymphs during late summer. Nymphs are inactive during the winter and start feeding again in the Spring. Then they molt in to adults through the summer months. They spend the fall feeding and breeding. males die off and females survive through the winter to lay their eggs the following spring. Have a good day
