My active dog gets bored when I'm cycling. How to keep him stimulated?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Blue Heeler | Male | neutered | 3 years and 2 months old | 26 lbs

I have an Australian Cattle Dog. I love him. He's the best. I almost got him close to where I want him to be. Problem is when I go to work I put him in a crate. I'm also a cyclist. I feel bad putting him in the crate again after work just for me to ride. If I let him out while I ride he gets bored easily and he starts scratching on the door. I've dedicated basically my whole life to this dog. It's worth it. But sometimes I just wanna ride.

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It is so nice that you are so concerned about making sure Buddy is happy. It is important to make this a big part of your life. It is also ok to have other things in your life, like cycling. If you feel that Buddy isn't getting enough exercise, you can always hire a dog walker to take him out while you are at work for some added play time. Otherwise just make sure you are still giving Buddy time for walks and ways to blow off steam (agility training for heelers is a really good activity to help with keeping them stimulated), and when you want to go for rides he can just hang out and rest. Best of luck with Buddy, and with your rides!
