My dog is a chronic snuffler. How can I clear her nasal goop?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Lily went to the vet last week for making a weird sound while breathing. She was diagnosed as a chronic snuffler and was given antibiotics and drops. They said what she really needs is a big sneeze to clear it out. She had a huge sneeze when she got home which resulted in a mix of blood, snot, and puss the size of a $0.25 coin. she started to sound that way again and steam doesn't work, neither does tickling her nose for a sneeze. What can I do to get the goop out?

I am sorry to hear about Lily. These can be very frustrating cases. Sometimes nasal saline drops can be helpful if your pet will tolerate these. Another off-label product we find helpful in some cases is a nasal drop made using the drug Cerenia. You could ask your vet if they offer this or can research how to mix it up. In some cases we may also recommend additional testing such as scoping, dental X-ray, or CT.
