My hamster has a big tumor. Is it benign or something serious?

If Hazel is eating, drinking, not losing weight, and is playing and exploring like her normal self, then she is likely not painful and you can just ignore the tumor. If Hazel is acting sore, not moving, losing weight, not eating, and not playing, then it might be best for Hazel to have her put to sleep. Your vet can usually do this at no cost, you can call your local clinic and ask how much it would be to put Hazel to sleep. Best of luck with Hazel.

I would need to see it to confirm but it is probably a tumor, in hamsters these tumors are usually malignant and not treatable, surgery is a possibility but it would personally not recommend it. other than that there is very little that can be done, if the lump ulcerates then antibiotic treatment can be attempted to treat the secondary infection.

This looks very suspicious of a mammary or breast tumor. These tumors can be cancerous or benign and do tend to grow very large very quickly. I would recommend that your veterinarian examine her and give you advice on whether it can be surgically removed.

If cured properly (abscess has to be cleaned and flushed) Hazel can live long time. This lump needs to be ideally assessed by your veterinarian to have a definitive and specific answer. Usually there are two ways your vet can do that a part from examining it directly during physical examination. A biopsy can be taken under local or general anesthetic, otherwise a smaller sample through a fine needle can be aspirated (this technique is called FNA= fine needle aspiration). Differentials include skin cysts, infections, benign or more sinister type of tumors. Lumps and bumps can be many different things include tumors (caused by cancer, which is caused by bad luck), abscesses (balls of pus from an infection), cysts (caused by blocked glands), lipomas (fatty tissue that is caused by fat depositing in odd ways- uncommon in hamsters), or wounds that are very swollen. To know exactly what it is, you would need to go to your vet to have them do an exam, and likely take a sample of the tissue. Good luck with Hazel.

You should take Graham to a veterinarian for an exam. This could be a tumor, an abscess or a cyst. The vet can find out which of the three it is. If the tumor is not too big, it can be removed. An abscess is easily treated (lanced and evacuated, flushed) and a cyst can easily be emptied as well. Do not wait too long with taking him to the vet, as tumors grow, and abscesses can cause really bad infections.
